What is a dental implant?

Dental implants are replacement teeth that closely mimic the structure of natural teeth. Each implant features an imitation tooth root and crown, unlike a bridge, denture, or partial, which have no roots. The implant post, made from biocompatible material, is surgically placed into the jaw, and the crown is placed on top.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Compared to dentures, bridges, and partials, dental implants have many benefits.

  • Implants stand alone. They do not rely on surrounding teeth or gums for support.
  • Implants require no adhesive, clasps, or abutment crowns.
  • Implants can last a lifetime with proper care.
  • Implants become part of the jaw, so they are a lifelike prosthetic.
  • Implant posts stimulate jawbone tissue, so the bone does not deteriorate.
  • Implants do not slip out of place.
  • Implants can be cared for like natural teeth - no special maintenance required.

Can I have implants and dentures?

Yes. To secure loose dentures, Dr. Stephens or Dr. Gatewood may recommend a few dental implants. We call this style of prosthetic implant-secured or implant-retained dentures. In some cases, a patient's existing denture can be retrofitted to snap onto dental implant posts, though a new denture may be necessary.

How long does it take to get implants?

After a comprehensive evaluation of your teeth, gums, and jawbone density, the dentist can advise you about length of treatment and what to expect. Some patients require preliminary procedures, such as bone grafts or periodontal therapy, prior to implant placement. We always build a strong foundation for dental implants, so they'll be more likely to last your lifetime.

Do implants work for everyone?

Adequate jawbone density and good oral health are prerequisites for dental implants. However, in most cases, these two problems can be corrected to improve a patient's potential for a successful dental implant procedure. Other health conditions may disqualify you from implants, so consult with Dr. Stephens or Dr. Gatewood before making a decision.
