Despite your best efforts, you may at some point realize you have one or more damaged teeth. Perhaps tooth decay progressed out of control and now you need a root canal, or maybe a tooth is severely broken and fractured. In both cases, a dental crown may be the answer.
Dental crowns are durable, aesthetically pleasing tooth restorations. They can be used to protect individual teeth, and as part of a dental bridge to replace missing teeth.

Reasons You May Need a Dental Crown
Tooth crowns are an indispensible aspect of restorative dentistry. There are multiple ways they protect teeth that are vulnerable.
You may need a dental crown:
- To hold together a fractured tooth
- To protect a weak tooth
- To restore a badly decayed tooth
- To restore a severely worn tooth
- As part of a dental bridge
- As part of a dental implant
With decades of experience, our dentists will determine if a tooth crown or another type of restoration will be the right match for your dental issue.
The Dental Crown Process
In a conventional approach, one appointment is scheduled to prepare the tooth and a second appointment is scheduled to place the permanent crown on the tooth once it is fabricated. Depending on the circumstances, you may be able to condense the process into a single appointment.
In a standard two-appointment process, the first visit involves preparing the tooth for the crown. This process may include X-rays and/or removing tooth decay. Your comfort is paramount to what we do, and we will make sure the area around the tooth is sufficiently numbed if necessary. The tooth will probably need to be reduced in size with gentle abrasion so that the crown can fit over it.
An impression of the tooth is made and then a few weeks are required for the crown to be created. You'll come back to have it placed once it's ready, and wear a temporary in the meantime.
Dental Crowns in a Day with CEREC Technology
The CEREC machine makes a permanent restoration right in our office. This same-day smile technology means your tooth will be prepared and the restoration placed all in one visit. Most people are great candidates for this one-visit process.
A dental bridge is an option for restoring missing teeth. It utilizes dental crowns to support a porcelain replacement tooth. The tooth crowns are placed over the teeth adjacent to the gap, thereby providing sturdy support of the replacement in between.
Dental bridges are typically recommended in order to:
- Replace one or several missing teeth
- Restore an aesthetically pleasing smile
- Restore your ability to chew
- Restore your ability to speak well
- Restore a comfortable bite position
- Prevent other teeth from shifting or tilting into the space left by the missing tooth
Dental bridges, along with dental implants and dentures, are one of your tooth replacement options. If you are missing teeth, the dentists at Stephens & Gatewood Dentistry will determine your options for replacement and help you choose the right one for your expectations.
The Dental Bridge Process
The process is very similar to the process for individual dental crowns. You will come in for a preparatory visit, in which the teeth will be made ready for the placement of the crowns. Then impressions will be used to make the bridge, and you will return to have the dental bridge placed.
Longevity and Cost of Crowns and Bridges
Crowns and bridges are generally expected to last between five and 10 years. Some last much longer. Our team will check your restorations during your routine dental appointments, and we'll let you know if there are any problems that would necessitate their replacement.
As for cost, you should first check your dental insurance policy for coverage. Call our office to find out if we currently accept your policy. The exact cost varies depending on the circumstances, including how many teeth are being treated and the material used. We will make sure you have a clear, accurate estimate when you visit us for a consultation, and that we discuss insurance and financing.
