The Importance of Pediatric Dentistry
Pediatric dentistry focuses on helping to maintain the oral health of children at different stages in the developmental process, including infants, toddlers, children, and teenagers.
Ideally, pediatric dental care should start about six months after your child's first tooth erupts or around their first birthday — whichever happens first. Pediatric dental care continues until the final adult teeth have grown in.

I’ve been a patient of Dr.Stephens for 20 years and my hygienist has been Val for the same length of time. These two have kept my teeth and gums and the entire oral cavity healthy. I Would like to add that I have never experienced any pain with any procedure, and I have had many. The office is up to date with the latest equipment and is spotless and up to all standards required by the dental association. I would recommend this office to anyone looking for expert excellent care. The staff are so knowledgeable and are friendly and efficient.

They had a tv on the wall and one on the ceiling. The dental assistant was lovely and the dentist was awesome. I will definitely be back.

Our Pediatric Dental Care Procedures
Dental Cleanings
Though an at-home care routine goes a long way in preserving your child's oral health, our dentists recommend scheduling regular appointments at a dental practice. Our pediatric dentists can thoroughly clean your child's teeth, remove plaque and tartar buildup, and check for signs of problems so we can treat them before they become serious. Twice yearly cleanings will also give our dentists the opportunity to encourage healthy cleaning habits.
Dental Sealants
As your child's teeth and bone structures develop, preventative care is particularly important. Dental sealants can fill in tiny cracks in your child's molars — teeth in the back of the mouth that can be difficult for children to clean properly. These sealants keep bacteria from settling into the cracks and help prevent decay.
Fillings
Cavities occur when bacteria builds up in the mouth and breaks down the structure of a tooth. If your child has a cavity, our pediatric dentists can remove the decayed and damaged parts of a tooth and restore it with a filling to alleviate your child's pain and return functionality to the tooth.
Orthodontics
Children can receive orthodontic treatment to correct misalignment as young as the age of seven. This can set your child up for straight teeth for life and fix minor misalignment before it becomes major misalignment in adulthood. Additionally, space maintainers can help ensure that there's enough space in your child's jaw for permanent teeth to erupt following the premature loss of baby teeth.
Emergency Dental Care
Kids will be kids, but their active lifestyles can often lead to accidents. If your child is having a dental emergency, our pediatric dentists can help with a variety of dental problems, like fractured teeth, missing teeth, and mouth trauma.
Sedation Dentistry
Just as many adult patients are nervous about undergoing dental procedures, children and teens can have the same fears. Our dental practice offers sedation options to ensure patient comfort throughout intensive procedures and to help keep dental visits as positive as possible.
What to Expect at Your Child's First Dental Visit
We want your child's dental experience to be a positive one, and we do that by creating a kid-friendly environment. Our staff members will allow your child to become familiar with their dentist, the dental office, and the dental instruments without it being an overwhelming experience.
During your child's appointment, one of our pediatric dentists will examine your child's teeth, jaws, gums, and oral tissues to ensure everything is developing properly.
Following your child's appointment, you'll be provided with the knowledge you need to maintain your child's oral health at home.
Fighting Dental Anxiety: WHAT YOU CAN DO AS A PARENT OR GUARDIAN

Children are fast learners, and by starting trips to our Spring, TX, dental practice early, you'll be exposing your child to an integral part of their overall care and allowing it to become normalized quickly.
Be Present
When you're present during your child's pediatric dental care, your child can feel more secure as they undergo a process that's unfamiliar to them. This will help their appointment go more smoothly and successfully.Reward Good Behavior
Following your child's appointment, be sure to give them the positive reinforcement they need to associate trips to the dentist with positivity. We recommend praising them and giving them a small toy so they know they did well.
When patients become comfortable with the dentist as children, they're often comfortable with dentists as adults, meaning they won't be afraid to maintain their oral health and have fewer problems for years to come.
"I can say it’s the best dental experience I’ve had." See Why Our Patients Love Us
Stephens & Gatewood Dentistry is an amazing place. I've been seen by more than one dentist and they are all great, along with their staff. However, Dr. Swann was my dentist here recently he is so patient, soft spoken, he listened and understood what I was expressing about my teeth issues. He did an amazing job on all the work I got done, especially my crowns. Thank you.
