Preventative Dentistry Spring, TX

There is no better investment in your oral and overall health than preventative dentistry. Making regular dental checkups will save you money and time while improving your quality of life. Plus, a healthy smile is the best foundation for a beautiful smile.

As much as the Houston dentists at Stephens & Gatewood have worked to master advanced restorative dentistry techniques, we know it’s best for our patients to never need that type of dentistry. With careful preventative dentistry–including home hygiene and regular dental checkups–many people can retain their teeth for life with little to no restorative dentistry. Please contact us today to learn how we can help you maintain your beautiful smile.

Benefits of Preventative Dentistry

Everyone can benefit from preventative dentistry in Houston. If you’re not already practicing preventative dentistry, you are missing out on:

  • Reduced dental care costs
  • Reduced overall healthcare costs
  • A more beautiful smile
  • Avoiding dental discomfort
  • Time savings
  • More convenient scheduling
  • Peace of mind

Preventative dental care is inexpensive and helps you avoid expensive restorative dentistry. Plus, it can save you on other healthcare costs. Your oral health and overall health are linked. People with poor oral health might spend thousands of dollars more a year on related medical conditions. Gum disease is the leading cause of these excess health costs, and we’ll talk about them in detail on that page.

Getting regular preventative dentistry helps you keep your teeth beautiful. It removes unsightly buildup of tartar, and helps you avoid cavities, inflamed gums, and other oral health problems that damage your smile.

We don’t like to focus on dental discomfort too much, but it’s true that poor oral health can be painful. At first you might notice bleeding and pain from your gums when you eat. A tooth might become sensitive to temperature, pressure, and sweets. Later, dental pain can become constant as untreated problems worsen.

Preventative dentistry saves time. It takes just minutes at home each day, and a dental checkup takes less than an hour every six months. Restorative dentistry visits can take much longer. Plus, you can schedule preventative dental visits at your convenience. When you need restorative dentistry, you might find your urgent need disrupts your entire schedule.

Finally, preventative dentistry gives you peace of mind. You won’t have to panic at every twinge in your mouth. The appearance of a blemish on your tooth doesn’t mean you have an emergency. Put your mind at ease until your next checkup at Stephens & Gatewood Dentistry.

What to Expect at a Dental Checkup

When you have a dental checkup at Stephens & Gatewood Dentistry in Houston, we will:

  • Ask you about your oral and overall health
  • Clean and polish your teeth
  • Examine your teeth and gums, including advanced imaging and screening
  • Ask you about your oral and overall health
  • Clean and polish your teeth
  • Examine your teeth and gums, including advanced imaging and screening

We will start by asking you how you’re feeling, and whether you have any concerns about your oral and overall health. Partly, we like our patients and want to keep up on what’s going on in your life. However, we also want to know if you’ve noticed any possible problems with your teeth. Does anything hurt? Have you noticed any changes in your bite? Do you see any discolorations in your teeth or gums? Are you sleeping well? Then we’ll make sure to check these concerns and talk about them as part of your visit.

We’ll clean and polish your teeth. One of the most important aspects of your dental checkup is removing tartar buildup. Tartar is hardened dental plaque. Left alone, these unsightly buildups will grow. They’re not just a cosmetic problem–they can shelter oral bacteria and lead to worse gum disease and tooth decay.

With your teeth cleaned, we will examine them to make sure they’re healthy. We’ll look for tooth discoloration that might be demineralization or cavities. We will check your gums to make sure they’re healthy and have a tight seal with your teeth. We’ll perform screening for oral cancer. We may also recommend other tests or imaging appropriate to resolve your concerns or possible signs of trouble we see.

Oral Hygiene: Preventative Dentistry at Home

Of course, a major component of preventative dentistry is your at-home oral hygiene routine. To help your teeth stay healthy, you should practice good oral hygiene at home. This includes brushing twice a day and flossing daily.

Both manual and electric toothbrushes are effective. Use the one that works best for you. The same is true for flossing. Use the floss that is comfortable and convenient for you.

If we notice concerns about your oral hygiene, we might recommend changes. This might include changing your toothbrush or floss, increasing how often you brush, or, sometimes, brushing less. Aggressive tooth brushing is the leading cause of receding gums.
