Embarrassing chips and other flaws on your teeth may be causing you to hide your smile. Porcelain veneers are thin, custom, non-removable tooth prosthetics. Fabricated to have an ideal shape and color, veneers can provide the exact smile style you have always wanted.
In Spring, Texas, the experienced dentists at Stephens & Gatewood Dentistry are passionate about creating good-looking, healthy smiles. To schedule a free consultation at one of our two office locations, please call 281-320-2000.
Porcelain Veneer Candidates
Veneers work by concealing the tooth flaws beneath them. Some of the most common flaws corrected with veneers are:
- Chipped teeth
- Stained or discolored teeth
- Worn teeth
- Misshapen teeth
- Teeth that are too small
- Misaligned teeth
Porcelain veneers can sometimes be used to conceal a crooked tooth, making it appear straight. But Invisalign® or ClearCorrect® may be suggested for certain cases of misalignment. If there is also an underlying bite problem, clear braces will most likely be suggested instead of veneers.
Similarly, if a tooth is badly fractured or otherwise seriously damaged, a tooth crown or other restoration may be recommended. While veneers are ideal in their ability to conceal tooth flaws, they cannot protect a weakened, broken tooth the same way a tooth crown does.
The only way to know if you are a good candidate is to visit the dentists at Stephens & Gatewood. In addition to the issues discussed above, we will determine whether gum disease, cavities or any other dental problems are present. These would have to be treated before veneers placement. We have been providing porcelain veneers for a very long time, and we can first determine if it makes sense for you, and then help you decide if you want to choose this cosmetic service.
The Veneers Process
The standard process takes about three weeks from start to finish. First, you will visit us for a consultation. If porcelain veneers are chosen, your next appointment involves scanning your teeth and preparing them for the veneers. The enamel will be gently roughened so that the veneers have a surface to adhere to. The scans of your teeth are sent to a veneers lab, where the thin porcelain pieces are fabricated.
You'll then wait for the veneers to be created. You'll wear a temporary in the meantime. Once the veneers are completed, you will come to your appointment to have them bonded to your teeth. At the end of this office visit, you will walk out of our door with your rejuvenated smile.
Because of their versatility, veneers are often included in smile makeovers. In such an approach, they may be combined with other restorative services to enhance and strengthen your teeth and gums.
Many people are eligible for one-appointment veneers made with CEREC technology. This state-of-the-art machine mills the veneer right in our dental office from a scan of your mouth.
It means we can place the veneers without the use of a temporary, letting you enjoy your new smile immediately.
Advantages of Choosing Porcelain Veneers
Veneers are not only aesthetically outstanding, they are durable as well. The main advantages of choosing them include that they:
- Last several years or longer
- Are highly stain-resistant
- Are highly resistant to chips and cracks
- Look like natural tooth enamel
- Cover multiple tooth flaws at once
The porcelain material itself has light-reflecting properties much like natural enamel does. Therefore, when you smile, your veneers glisten like your natural teeth, producing an ideal luster and sheen.
They are quite tough despite their delicate appearance. Veneers will stand up to the forces of biting and chewing. If you play sports, you should wear a mouth guard to protect your teeth. Similarly, if you have problems with grinding your teeth at night, our dentists will discuss a custom night guard with you, not only to protect your veneers but your teeth as well.
